The Romanian Academic Society announces the launch of the “Improving Civil Society’s Watchdog Role” project, financed via the Global Oportunities Fund (GOF), under the administration of the Embassy of the United Kingdom. Said project aims to highlight the conflicts of interests and incompatibilities in the area of administration.
Even if plenty of serious cases of local publicly elect individuals breaking the law are well-known on a local level, it is very rare that they become public. There are such cases which make it into the pages of the central press, but not even then do they produce the expected results. Specifically, the authorities empowered to take action make no effort to eliminate the publicized cases of law breaking. Under these circumstances, the project aims to monitor several county council members with a focus on incompatibilities and conflicts of interests.
The launch will be attended by the British Ambassador to Bucharest, Mr. Robin Barnett, Mr. Cristian Diaconescu, Social Democrat Party vice-president, anti-corruption expert Ms. Laura Ştefan and local investigation journalists. The former attendees will present the manner in which council members are monitored in the given counties. Learn more about the project on the Romania Curata website – www.romaniacurata.ro.
The launch, followed by a press conference, will take place Monday, October 22, 2007, at 2 PM, at the GDS headquarters on Calea Victoriei 120.
