11.03.2007: CPC-AS: “Postponing European Elections Liable to Create Dangerous Precedent”

Timişoara, March 11, 2007

The Coalition for a Clean Parliament – European Elections, reunited in Timişoara for the Timisoarea Proclamation was surprised to learn of the intentions to postpone the European elections for a date yet undetermined.

Coalition members believe that the only reasons to postpone the European elections come from the political class itself. Therefore, we demand all those who propose we hold referendums prioritize European elections over all other political projects. The seriousness of the political class is demonstrated by its respect for previously made engagements, such as those connected to European elections, whose postponement would create a dangerous precedent. We have no guarantees that there won’t be other competing projects for another potential date of the European elections.

Consequently, the CPC-AE is demanding the current Government that they don’t postpone the date already set for the European elections, which would occur at the same time with those in Bulgaria, according to the promise we made our European partners.

The participants at the Timişoara meeting of the CPC-AE were: Alianţa Civică, Academia de Advocacy, Asociaţia Pro-Democraţia, Centrul pentru Jurnalism Independent, Freedom House, Grupul pentru Dialog Social, Societatea Timişoara and the Romanian Academic Society.
